Land and Housing
Land Rights Program
Under the Land Rights Program, the organization has documented land conflict in Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa Counties, and continues to work closely with key stakeholders including the National Land Commission, the County Governments and the Ministry of Lands for the implementation of this Program. Research and documentation are key components in driving the land agenda and so far the organization has two major publications namely
NOWHERE TO LAND: The Case of Grabbed, Inaccessible and Neglected Fish Landing Sites in Mombasa County and ENTITLEMENT WITHOUT TITLES: The Case of Unregistered Land Owners in Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa Counties
While the organization continuous to support communities in litigation and legal clinics, more effort has been directed towards resolving land cases through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms. After Haki Yetu, MUHURI and the National Land Commission (NLC) teamed up to train the County Land Management Board (CLMB) members on a structured ADR model in December 2015, commendable success has been registered ever since. An invaluable partnership with the CLMBs has also been built. We remain steadfast in our effort to see historical land injustices are resolved; and the country realises the land reforms agenda.
Land & Housing Program
Under the Land & Housing Program, Haki Yetu is committed to ensure fair and participatory engagement of all groups of society. This includes protection of vulnerable communities to the threat of eviction, community mobilization and awareness on rights and procedures in the context of large scale development projects, and representation and empowerment of local actors for insurance of fair procedures in cases of land irregularities.
Long Term Goals
Decent and affordable housing for the vulnerable communities
Current and historical land injustices are addressed
